What is Palo Santo?
Palo Santo is nothing more than a species of tree officially known as Bursera graveolens. Surprised? This plant is commonly referred to as the "holy wood" due to its exceptional properties. However, today the name Palo Santo is reserved for small sticks that are used as natural incense. These small and unassuming sticks possess a unique fragrance that can not only relax the mind and body but also positively influence the atmosphere of a room. Year after year, the popularity of Palo Santo continues to grow, all thanks to its unique scent and the completely different level of relaxation this magical incense can bring to the human soul. Although there are many myths surrounding Palo Santo, making some people skeptical about it, anyone who has had the chance to light this incense in their space can unequivocally confirm its beneficial effects.
How is Palo Santo incense obtained?
Despite its immense popularity and relatively high demand, among people who regularly use Palo Santo, there is still a lot of ignorance regarding its origin and the way it is obtained. So, let's start from the beginning, that is, the origin of the Bursera graveolens tree. Bursera graveolens naturally occurs in South America, Mexico, and the Galapagos Islands.
During the flowering period (from January to June), the inhabitants of these areas can enjoy the slightly sweet scent emitted by this magical tree. As we mentioned, the name Palo Santo comes directly from the Spanish term "holy wood." Even in ancient times, Palo Santo branches were collected by the local population and then used, among other things, for aromatherapy. Today, Palo Santo has very wide applications. Contrary to appearances, it is not only used to produce natural incense; the tree also has an excellent structure that allows for the creation of matero, which are vessels needed for preparing Yerba Mate tea. As you can see, the uses of the holy tree are indeed very extensive. The process of obtaining incense from Palo Santo also stands out from other similar products. Why? Because in the countries where Palo Santo grows, cutting them down is prohibited. In practice, this means that incense can be obtained only from naturally dead trees and fallen branches. This is a much better and more ecological solution.
Properties of Palo Santo
