What is spirulina?
Spirulina is a type of marine algae with an intense green color. It is cultivated in many regions of the world—mainly in Asia, around Mexico and Hawaii, in South America, and in some parts of Africa. These areas are specially selected due to favorable climatic conditions for algae cultivation. The beneficial properties of spirulina were already known to the Aztecs. In Europe, its popularity began to increase in the 1970s.
Properties of spirulina
Spirulina is a true nutritional powerhouse. Its greatest advantage is its naturally high bioavailability—unlike chlorella, it does not have a hard cellulose cell wall, which means its valuable components are easily and quickly absorbed by the body.

Spirulina — why choose the one with broken cell walls?
Spirulina, or more precisely Arthrospira platensis, is a cyanobacterium (blue‑green algae) with a naturally soft and easily assimilated cell wall. Unlike some other algae, it does not require a special wall‑breaking process because its structure is inherently delicate. However, additionally breaking the cell walls makes the nutrients even more accessible and better absorbed by the body.

Spirulina in Traditional Chinese Medicine
According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), spirulina has a cooling effect. This means it can be particularly helpful for people with excess “heat” in the body, manifested by, among other things, a feeling of overheating, redness, irritability, or outbursts of anger.
At the same time, because spirulina supports cooling, people who tend to feel chilled, have cold hands and feet, or generally feel a lack of warmth should consume it in moderation or combine it in the diet with more warming foods (such as ginger, cinnamon, or cooked root vegetables). This helps avoid excessive cooling and maintain the body’s thermal balance.
Recommended dosage
How to use?
It is most often recommended to take 2–3 g of spirulina per day, which, in the case of 500 mg tablets, means about 4–6 tablets per day. You can start with a smaller amount (e.g., 3–4 tablets) and gradually increase it while observing your body’s response.
Serving size and timing
Spirulina can be taken at any time of day, although many people prefer to take it on an empty stomach with plenty of water to optimize absorption. You can also take it during or after a meal if your stomach is sensitive and you prefer a gentler form of supplementation. Remember that consistency is key to achieving the best results.
