Guayusa (Ilex guayusa Loes) is an evergreen tree native to South America that grows especially in the upper Amazon region of Ecuador. Due to its health benefits, it has long been cultivated and consumed by the Amazon tribes, who greatly appreciate the tea made from its leaves. This tea is known for its stimulating and concentration-enhancing properties. Due to its high caffeine content, guayusa will be more like coffee in its action than any tea variety.

For the Kichwa people of the Ecuadorian Amazon, the herb has a special meaning because it is an important part of their daily lives and history. Legend has it that the people of this tribe prayed for a plant that would teach them how to dream. One night these prayers were answered and two members of Kichwa had an extraordinary and unexpected encounter with all their ancestors who gave them this wonderful plant. It was supposed to help connect with the world of dreams. Guayusa was warmly welcomed by the local community and very quickly became a major element of its culture. She took a place of honor during the ceremony where at 3 am the tribesmen gather around the fire and drink their precious brew [1]. Mental acuity, heightened concentration, and increased awareness are especially helpful for them when hunting. However, apart from everyday rituals, the infusion is also used for a bit more mystical purposes, namely to work with dreams, which under the influence of the plant become very expressive and are often considered prophetic. The drink is also a great introduction to the Ayahuasca ceremony as it helps to cleanse the body and mind, and also strengthens and extends the "journey". There are also mentions of the use of the herb by the Amazon population in order to strengthen the organism in general, increase fertility and libido, as well as improve digestion and alleviate stomach discomfort.

Origin:

Ilex guayusa comes from the section of the upper Amazon that includes the Andes. The greatest contribution to its cultivation is made by Ecuador, including the indigenous people of Kichwa. In terms of the method of breeding, in principle, it can be said that they allow plants to "grow by themselves", because they care very much about maintaining a balanced flow between species, as it happens in a rainforest, without human intervention, without fertilizers and chemicals [1] .

Characteristic:

Ilex guayusa Loes is an evergreen tree belonging to the dioecious. Reaches sizes from 6 m to 30 m in height. It has an elliptical, lanceolate or oblong structure of leaves with smooth or serrated edges, about 7-22 cm x 2.5-7 cm in size. White flowers with a fine structure, red and spherical fruit.

Ilex guayusa covers areas of the upper Amazon, located at altitudes from 200 m to 2000 m above sea level. It is most common in Ecuador, Peru and Colombia. It rarely occurs as a wild species, usually it can be found as a cultivated plant [3].

Chemical composition:

caffeine
phenolic compounds
chlorogenic acid
quercetin-3-o-hexose
carotenoids (especially lutein) [2]
Guayusa has a high caffeine content and twice the amount of antioxidants compared to green tea.
