Myrrh - An Extraordinary Incense
Myrrh - An Extraordinary Incense

What is Myrrh?

Not everyone is familiar with the term myrrh, and even fewer know how this valuable substance is obtained. Myrrh is an aromatic resin produced by certain trees and shrubs of the balsam family. The highest quality myrrh is obtained from a species called the myrrh balsam tree (Commiphora abyssinica), which primarily grows in Africa and the Middle East, in countries such as Rwanda, Kenya, Somalia, or Ethiopia. However, myrrh can also be obtained from other members of the balsam family, which can affect the quality of the final product. The name "myrrh" comes from the Semitic languages and means "bitter", and according to biblical scholars, it is the myrrh balsam tree that provided the myrrh mentioned repeatedly in Christian texts.

Myrrh has a consistency similar to densely crystallized honey and is characterized by a rather bitter taste, reminiscent of spicy seasonings, most commonly associated with cinnamon. It is known for its exceptionally intense scent, rich in essential oils, sometimes described as a blend of cinnamon and orange notes.

Usually, myrrh flows naturally from the balsam trees, without the need to cut the bark. However, by cutting the bark, the resin can flow more abundantly, which is a technique often used for its collection, even though such a method may lower the quality of myrrh. Naturally flowing myrrh takes the form of lumps with a reddish-brown or orange color, whereas myrrh obtained by cutting the bark is usually darker.

How was myrrh used in the past?

In ancient times, myrrh played a significantly more important role than it does today, being a precious gift for the social elite until the 14th century. Its value was partly established by the Christian tradition, which speaks of offering myrrh to the newborn Christ in Bethlehem. It could be said that myrrh was valued as much as precious stones and gold, and giving it was a gesture of great respect.

Presenting myrrh symbolized both wealth and the high social status of the giver. It is also important to remember that myrrh oil was commonly used in the embalming of the dead, which was an expression of respect and love for the deceased person. In the past, myrrh was also used in medicine as a healing agent, primarily for treating diseases of the digestive, reproductive, and respiratory systems. Doctors recommended its use for people with asthma or stomach problems. Additionally, this resin was valued for maintaining oral hygiene, although only a few could afford it.

What are the current uses of myrrh?

Myrrh oil is becoming an increasingly popular element in the cosmetic industry, finding its application in the production of creams and balms for use on the entire body.
It is particularly recommended for mature skin and combating numerous wrinkles, due to its smoothing abilities and support in collagen regeneration in the skin.
Myrrh still finds its application in religious rituals, mainly in Christian churches, with myrrh incense being the most esteemed, alongside the myrrh oil itself.

The importance of myrrh comes from its unique properties, both physical and mystical, which make it a unique raw material. Myrrh is a powerful antioxidant, as confirmed by laboratory studies,
protecting the body from the harmful effects of free radicals, which contribute to skin aging and cancer development. Thus, myrrh acts as an effective defense against these threats.

Additionally, the antibacterial and antifungal properties of myrrh mean that it was used to treat hard-to-heal wounds, and currently it is used in products against acne.
Myrrh can also alleviate symptoms of hypothyroidism.

What properties characterize myrrh?

The use of myrrh would not make sense without its unique features that make it so valued. It attracts attention with both its physical and spiritual properties.

Myrrh is distinguished primarily as a powerful antioxidant, as studies have shown. Antioxidants are known for protecting the body against harmful free radicals, which contribute to skin aging and the development of cancerous diseases.
Thus, myrrh serves as protection against these dangers.

It is also worth emphasizing its antibacterial and antifungal properties, which have led to its use in treating hard-to-heal wounds. Today, myrrh is used in treating rosacea and common acne and can help in alleviating symptoms of hypothyroidism.

Myrrh is also valued in Ayurvedic medicine and for its relaxing properties. The scent of burned myrrh has a calming effect, which can be helpful in dealing with stress, depression, or anxiety. However, it should be seen as a complement to traditional treatments, and medical consultation is advised in case of diseases.
