White Sage – A Historical Overview

White sage (Salvia Apiana) has been revered for its remarkable properties since ancient times. Ancient peoples used it not only for medicinal purposes but also to ward off evil spirits and negative forces. The widespread use of sage is attributed to Native Americans, who used it in their cleansing rituals and to fight various infections and diseases.

White sage continues to play an important role in the traditions of many indigenous cultures in North America, where it is used, among other things, to prepare a drink from ground sage seeds, known as pinole. The Cahuilla tribe used sage root tea to support women after childbirth, helping them regain their strength. The Chumash consumed sage leaves and stems as food.

In 1991, research conducted at the University of Arizona confirmed the antibacterial properties of white sage, proving it effective against pathogens such as Candida brassicae, Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, and Klebsiella penumoniae.
